Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado, 1992–2017
Spanning out 5.9 miles (9.5 kilometers) Over the River stretched over the Arkansas River between Cañon City and Salida in south-central Colorado, in panels of silvery, lustrous fabric. (In August 1992, 1993, and 1994) Christo and Jeanne-Claude and their team traveled the majority of the Rocky Mountains in the United States, approximately 14,000 miles (22,530 kilometers) in search of the perfect site for their next monumental installation. This project was the first-ever completed work of art used for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Over the River initially took federal action, and resulted in a 1,686-page comprehensive analysis.
