Hung Liu’s Blue Moon is one of the first works in which she combines the cut-out or shaped canvases from decades earlier in her career with her current paintings inspired by Dorothea Lange’s Dust Bowl era FSA photographs. In this painting, a woman who is experiencing difficult times during the American Depression era is looking toward a circle Liu deems a “blue moon.” By calling this painting “Blue Moon,” Liu tries to give hope to a situation that seems unbearable, by making it appear that anything is possible, and that miracles can happen even when there seems to be no end to bitterness in sight.
