Hung Liu – Crow Song
Dimensions: 36 x 48″
Media: oil on canvas
Hung Liu’s Crow Song is a classic example of her ability to merge traditional with contemporary, to help us better understand the lessons of history. Here, She uses an appropriation of a calligraphic crow painted by a great Chinese master. Her iconic circle, representing infinity and unity, appears in both the ancient and the contemporary image of the mother and child.
Crow Song is a Madonna and Child type of image, a theme Liu later rendered as an African American Depression-era mother and child. In portraying both a Chinese and an African American version of Madonna and Child, she helps us remember that all people are of equal stature, throughout race, geography, and history.
