Hung Liu grew up in China during one of its most difficult periods. She was forced to flee her home in Changchun, just as the Dalai Lama was forced to flee his homeland of Tibet. Like the Dalai Lama, Liu’s life was involuntarily uprooted and taken over by the Chinese government. To survive the difficult circumstances of toiling in China’s wheat fields for four years with only one day off each year and little food, having her art career disrupted, and losing her father, Liu had to find a way to transform her struggles into beauty. Like the Dalai Lama, Hung developed a deep compassion for those who toiled alongside her, and she has dedicated her artistic career to giving those who might otherwise be forgotten a voice.

By just looking at Hung Liu’s Young Lama, I can feel it radiating a message of compassion, understanding, and acceptance. The Dalai Lama has always preached this and I feel he had to accept and understand at an early age that he was chosen to deliver this message to the world. People like him have always inspired me because they took the tougher road and dedicated themselves to human service.
