Hung Liu – Migrant Mother
Dimensions: 60 x 60″ unframed
Year: 2016
Medium: oil on canvas
Hung Liu’s Migrant Mother is one of the first paintings she made in her iconic series of Dust Bowl era paintings inspired by Dorothea Lange’s photography. Liu painted several images of mothers with children, in both Chinese and American contexts. Her Refugee Opera, Dry Well, Black Madonna, and Sanctuary are other such examples of her juxtaposition of impoverished women and their babies with the concept of madonna and child. Here, Liu inserts a block of color and an offering of flowers to provide hope to this bleak scene.
