Artwork Description
Hung Liu – War and Peace
Dimensions: 30 x 40″ paper
Year: 1993
Medium: hand made paper pulp and dye, unique pulp painting
Liu often used silhouettes of coded imagery juxtaposed with more obvious concrete imagery, to get her messages across. In this image she uses silhouettes of hands making gestures of hope for peace, such as the crossed finger and holding hands. In contrast, the two fighters are in conflict. 1993 saw the beginning of the Three Gorges Dam construction, which would flood numerous cultural sites. It was also the year Chinese talks with the Dalai Lama about Tibet’s future began to break down.
