“The seeds of this piece started back in 2007, when the rafts of the Miss Rockaway Armada were making their way down the Mississippi River and found themselves in some peril. That night I dreamt of a woman with enormous multicolored and variously patterned skirts who created a space of safe haven for the rafts to dock against the storm. The image stayed with me, and became one of the central themes of the raft voyages of the Swimming Citues of Switchback Sea in New York , and the Swimming Cities of Serenissima in Venice. We were something wildish and cast off, searching always for home, and this embrace became the language of return, of safe passage, of chosen family and of the new lands that love creates.” – Swoon
