Apocalypse Now proclaims “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.” Here, Robinson uses chemically processed fresheners for the air we breathe, juxtaposed with images and words representing the natural world—the pine tree, and smells such as coconut. This juxtaposition prompts us to ponder consumptive tendencies and our detachment/alienation from the natural world.
