Charles White (1918–1979) was a highly influential American artist known for powerful depictions of African American life and history. Gideon (circa 1945) exemplifies White’s exceptional draftsmanship and emotional depth. The framed dimensions measure 15 × 12 inches. The portrait conveys dignity, strength, and introspection, hallmarks of White’s socially conscious practice. He married another great artist–Elizabeth Catlett.
