Didier Mahieu draws from elsewhere: from the world around him, from people and their lives, from war, migration, and personal archives. Part antiquarian, part archivist, he began with his police officer grandfather’s notebook and the portrait of a woman who disappeared in 1942, transforming this fragment of an unknown life step by step. Holding in his hands a fragment of a life about which nothing is known moves him, and he transforms it, step by step, through different techniques. In an increasingly virtual world, he gives things a body again. He makes visible parts of our collective human soul which are impossible to comprehend in any other way.
