Hung Liu: Portraits of a Chinese Self

Fresh from her solo retrospective at the Oakland Museum of California we proudly present a new body of self-portraits by Hung Liu based on photographs of Hung from 1950 through the present day. In this exhibition, Hung explores the way the washes and drips dissolve the photo-based images, suggesting the passage of memory into history, while working to uncover the cultural and personal narratives fixed – but often concealed – in the photographic instant. Now regarded as the most important Chinese-American artist, Hung Liu images are in the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Dallas Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
