Beverly McIver’s painting of the white slip dress is a vulnerable image that relates to many different aspects of her life. Growing up, McIver’s mother was a housekeeper who loved the smell of clothes that had hung out on the line to dry. In 2017-2018, when Beverly McIver lived at the American Academy in Rome after winning the Rome Prize, she was homesick. She felt like an outsider, as one of the few black artists to ever have been awarded the prize. This slip dress, while at once delicate and humble, hangs on both a hanger and a line, perhaps indicative of McIver’s own inner feelings at the time she painted it.
