Beverly McIver won the Rome Prize and was a fellow at the American Academy in Rome in 2017-2018. Her palette shifted slightly during that time, as is evidenced in her Toy Horse and Rider painting as well as the white slip painting. McIver was accutely aware of her blackness while in Rome, absorbing the beauty and history of the place but also wondering how to fit into Roman society. This image of a black toy in a jail prisoner uniform riding an elegant white horse illustrates her life at that time, as does her return to depicting ojects of childhood affection.
