Beverly McIver – Untitled Ropes and Locks
Dimensions: 40 x 48″ size type
Year: c. 2020
Medium: oil on canvas
In 2020 during the pandemic, McIver created a series of painting that featured herself in long dreadlocks. The perspective of some viewers was that the dreadlocks were hair, but for McIver and other black viewers, they were also seen in the paintings as ropes, due to the manner in which McIver rendered them entangling the viewer. These paintings are particularly successful in their display of McIver’s vulnerability both personally and universally.
