Diego Romero’s Apocalypto is an iconic work within Diego Romero’s iconography. Romero and other contemporary Native American artists often reference the Pueblo Revolt and the atrocities that led up to it – enslavement, whippings, amputations of limbs, and murders. These abuses caused the pueblos to rebel in what has been called America’s First Revolution. This image features the well known alternating dark/light square motif Romero uses and which can be found in ancient Native American clay pottery designs, as well. It is a way Romero brings the ancient and the present day together in a manner that elucidates the continued struggle of Indigenous Americans.

Romero’s works are currently the subject of a museum exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum of Art, and they are held in prestigious museums worldwide, such as The British Museum, and more.
