Part of the “Body in a Box” series, this work interprets the Japanese legend of Tamatori Hime (Princess Tamatori) through the lens of modern environmental disaster and human hubris, centering on a physical form trapped and distorted within a man-made frame.
In the original myth, the Princess steals a sacred orb from the Water God—an ancient Ocean Spirit taking the form of a colossal dragon who chases her in furious pursuit through the sea depths. In this piece, the stolen orb is rendered as a radioactive symbol, crackling with a powerful bolt of lightning that surges across into the companion piece, Ocean Spirits II. The surrounding ocean is filled with bubbles bearing the same mark, evoking the contaminated waters of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Her desperate flight captures the tragic cycle of human ambition: mankind’s relentless desire to steal “godlike power” from the Ocean Spirit. Just as the stolen orb unleashes the wrath of the sea’s ancient divine force, humanity’s attempt to harness atomic energy inevitably slips beyond control, turning a dream of absolute power into an uncontrollable catastrophe. Trapped within the rigid borders of this man-made box, her constrained and distorted form mirrors the inescapable consequences of a world corrupted by our own arrogance.
