An apsara is a class of female celestial beings, often translated as a “celestial nymph” or “fairy,” in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The Sanskrit root means “moving in the water” or “passing through the clouds/waters”. In this work, Hung Liu memorializes this idea through her trademark bold palette, drips (or weeping veils) and circle symbol symbolizing harmony, completeness, unity, and perfection. The gold background and nymph at top right complete this masterfully composed
treasure.
