Dream of Spring shows a small girl sitting near two water jars looking at an open arch the artist has filled with flowers and a single bird’s head taken from traditional Chinese painting-as if she is looking into the ancient past. Above her is a scaled-up grasshopper also from the traditional painting. It suggests what’s in the girl’s mind or what’s in the grass at her feet. The shadow of a tree is cast mysteriously across the arched door. The painting has the feel of a daydream. Objects of some kind would go in the spaces on either side of the canvas.
