Hung Liu Narcissus III (Blue)
This is an interesting piece when it comes to color. This series of works from Hung Liu are taken from Victorian era portraits that were in sepia tones and were devoid of any color. Hung Liu uses color to reinterpret these photographs and sometimes finds it a process in selecting the right colors.
This painting is compelling when it comes to contrast in color choices.
The blue and purple are from the same spectrum. They are related but at the same time they contrast beautifully. Blue is a primary color while purple is a secondary Color. When mixing these two colors you create a Tertiary Color. Narcissus III (Blue) embodies the manner in which Hung Liu, as an artist, combines struggle and empathy, to create a sense of sublime beauty and a meaningful lesson in humanity.
