Hung Liu’s series of Chinese Prostitute paintings is based on a group of photographs used to market these young women to their clients. Her title Relic reasserts the perception of these women not as individuals, but as purely decorative objects to be enjoyed and to bring pleasure. Liu often employed box shelf attachments to her paintings, using their dimensionality to emphasize their message. Here, the red box contains the Chinese character for both “wife” and “broom,” reiterating the perception that women functioned to serve men. She includes the cricket to symbolize hope of a better life for these women.
