Hung Liu’s use of gold leaf on panel is reminiscent of religious iconographic paintings. The gold signifies the sanctity of the subject. Just as Dorothea Lange captured the idealism of her child subjects in her photographs, so does Hung elevate this determined optimism in this painting. In this work, Liu uses colored drips in the same manner as she uses the brightly colored contour lines to capture the vitality of youth.
