To learn new techniques and to explore new materials, Chicago explored the 1960s LA car culture. She enrolled in an auto-body school to learn how to spray paint on metal—applying colorfully lacquered paintings of emblematic designs with a feminist approach. Based on her 1965 original car hood sculpture, Chicago created this new and reimagined sculpture. The late 1960s and early 1970s represented a motivating time in her career where she focused on the transformative and visual perception of her artwork.
