Meditations on language and perception, Kay Rosen’s paintings evoke the conceptual, text-based art popularized in the 1960s by such artists as Ed Ruscha and Lawrence Weiner. Her primary focus is wordplay, and within this subject she formally explores shifts in color, spacing, and capitalization. The product is a body of work that makes the viewer question the way that they approach text and read. “The word is a construction that contains aspects of other physical constructions, like buildings or bodies,” says the artist, whose academic background is in linguistics.
