Walter Robinson’s Buffalo Cookie fuses a sweet image with a dark past. This animal cookie is a well-known children’s snack. Here, Walter Robinson has created a regional Southwest edition of the mother’s cookie. The buffalo is a loaded image–unlike the candy-coated depiction here, the buffalo’s history is not so sweet. The United States military exterminated the buffalo en masse at the end of the American Civil War as part of their attempt to eradicate the Native American population.
Walter Robinson’s work investigates the mechanics of cultural and social anthropology. Using text and the strategies of appropriation, conflation, and dislocation, he uncovers the subconscious and biological human imperatives hidden beneath social, political, religious, and capitalist packaging.
