Etsuko Ichikawa - Vitrified 5418 (diptych)

A master of color theory, Aleya Hoerlein, based in Taos and New Zealand, plays with hues of blue, red, and black with soft and calming ombre. She develops the traditions of the Taos Transcendentalists, a spiritual abstract painting group started in Taos in the late 19th century. The Taos Transcendental Painting Group is a fascinating study of spiritual connection and boundary pushing artists in New Mexico, and the depth of their connections are expressed through abstraction. As member Raymond Jonson explains, “[the Taos Transcendentalists] believe that through the abstract and non-objective we will be able to state at least a portion of what life means.”
